What a wonderful site. Having just worked on the 394th missions for this period of time, it is truly humbling to find so much detail that has been found over and above the tiny amount that I had helped with.

I am so glad these hero's are honored with this wonderful website.
Some of these men were about finished with their tour of duty with only weeks left before returning home when these two accidents happened on D-Day.

As the Grandson of Fanny Whittingham, I wish to thank you for the incredible work you have done in piecing together this tradgety. At the time of this disaster, I was living in nearby Maidstone along with my Mother and her parents. My Mother and I shortly thereafter moved back to 82 Corporation Road across the street from the crash site.

Were these B26 units involved in the bombing of the La Roque bridge in Normandy, the "the hole in the net"?
I was there this August and have photos of the still broken railway bridge.
Over 20 bombing raids were required to destroy the bridge including dive bombers and marauders. A Canadian dive bomber pilot lost his life there.

This is wonderful. My father, who was 10 at the time, always talked of his favorite uncle, George Kyle, who was killed in WWII. George was Canadian, but had moved in with my Fathers family in Chicago before enlisting in the US Army; the reason that his gravestone says Ilinois on it. I'm certain that he had no idea that George died trying to save lives. Thank you for the information and the photos.

My Dad often used to speak of the plane that crashed in Corporation Road, near where he lived in the war. He saw the plane crash and he watched the fireman put the fires out sitting on the bomb rack. It was not until about an hour later that they realised the danger when the Army arrived.
My old next door neighbour Pat, talked of the other plane crashing in the field off Eastcourt Lane, opposite our house. There are cracks in the window bays which are a result of the explosion that followed. The estate agent surveyors tried to say it was subsidence until Pat put them right!

Excellent stories about a sad piece of history.

The two planes that crashed that day, one in Corporation Road on my Grandparents house, the other in the farm on Lower Rainham Road was opposite Magnolia House where my wife to be was living. She was 8 years old at that time. We have been married now for 56 years in just one weeks time on June 14/2014.

My Grandmother was the wife of Ssgt George Knight, the tail gunner of 050. I recently went to the Corporation Road site in December of 2014. What a sobering visit. Walking along the road you can piece the crash together due to the mid roof line in both buildings across from eachother. My Grandmother always talked of her husband and told me early in my youth about the crash. I never imagined that I would see the sight with my own eyes, and never even knew about the pictures until seeing this web page. AMAZING WORK! Reading through the accounts took me deeper into any story I have ever read. It was more sobering seeing that the only picture showing the plane was his section and serial number. In the sheets you will notice that 263 was in formation adjacent to 050, and also that 61-63 Corporation Road was where the photo of tail section was shown according to US reports. The bombs were jettisoned in part over 24 Corporation Road according to the reports if anyone is wondering about locations. Special thanks to my good friend Mr. Cook for helping me in my tour. Such a sad story and loss for everyone, my Grandmother never let go and loved her husband until the day she passed.

Fantastic site. George Gandon killed in No 24 was my Great Uncle. Until reading on this site we thought he died instantly. His wife Edith(Ede) Gandon (nee Stafford) was my Grandfather's eldest sister. On the morning of the sixth George heard a commotion got out of bed and went to the window when the house was hit. Ede was found alive hanging upside down suspended from the first floor. The house was demolished and she moved to the Stafford family home in Court Lodge Rd. Ede suffered from what is now known as post traumatic shock until her sad death in 1945.
